Thesis Title: A Target Cascading Methodology for Engineering Knowledge Management systems

About

Marco Bertoni graduated in Engineering Management at University of Bergamo (Italy) in December 2004 and earned his PhD at Politecnico di Milano during 2008. He is currently Post Doc in the subject of Functional Product Development at the Division of Innovation and Design as the Luleå University of Technology (Sweden).

The research focuses on Knowledge Enabled Engineering (KEE) methods and tools to support the conceptual design phase of Product Service Systems (PSS). The main purpose is to understand how to facilitate cross-functional/cross-company design teams in identifying, formalizing, communicating and displaying knowledge related to the later product/service lifecycle phases, to support early design decision-making activities. This encompasses the development of a knowledge sharing approach – named Engineering 2.0 – exploiting the mechanisms of social web to lower the threshold for collaboration, as well as the development of a color-coding approach for the visualization of lifecycle value information in a 3D CAD environment.

Marco is currently taking part to the EU FP7 CRESCENDO and to the VINNOVA FASTE projects:

CRESCENDO - Collaborative and Robust Engineering using Simulation Capability Enabling Next Design Optimisation - is and EU FP7 Integrated Project addressing the Vision 2020 objectives for the aeronautical industry, by contributing significantly to the fulfilment of the ACARE Strategic Research Agenda. CRESCENDO will develop the foundations for the Behavioural Digital Aircraft (BDA) that will provide the aeronautics supply chain with the means to realistically manage and mature the virtual product in each phase of its life cycle. Marco is has been leading the "Enterprise Collaboration Capabilities" work package (WP5.5) between January and June 2011. He is also involved in "Requirements Establishment" (WP2.2) leading the task "Criteria for Product Development and Engineering" (T2.2.3)and contributes to the "Training" work (WP1.5)

The Faste Laboratory is a A VINN Excellence Centre for Functional Product Innovation. The aim of the project is to find out how designers and design teams working in an Extended Enterprise setting doing Functional Product Development shall be supported by Distributed Collaborative Engineering and Simulation Driven Design methods and tools. Marco is currently project leader for "Cross-Functional Knowledge Sharing" (RP 3.2)

Marco has been responsible in the last few years for the “M7014T - Product Development Processes” and “M7015T - Theory and methodology for engineering product development” courses within the International Master in Product Development.

He has co-authored more 27 peer-reviewed publications and 2 book chapters .
